Creating An Effective Website

The old saying about websites about a dozen years ago was that if you build it, they will come.  Well, it doesn't work that way anymore.  In order to attract visitors on a consistent basis, you have to create an effective and dynamic website in the first place and then you have to promote it to your defined audience.  Promoting your website has more to do with personal flair, but here are a few tips for designing an effective website:

bulletPurpose--The first few questions that need to be answered are: What is the purpose of the website?  Who is the intended audience?  Is the audience very formal, corporate, or are they more rock 'n roll, laid back, or artsy?  By answering these questions, you are in the first stages of creating the them, look, and eventually, content of the website.
bulletGive people a reason to visit the website--With over a billion pages out there in cyberspace and tough marketing and promotional tactics from many of them, you have to give people a reason to visit your website.  Try to be unique, more insightful, and at the same time pragmatic.  What makes your website so unique and why should people visit it?
bulletEase of use and navigation--This is perhaps the most important tip included in this list.  You can have the best content and the coolest looking site but if it is hard to navigate the pages, no one will waste their time to try to figure out the navigational labyrinth when they can simply go to a site with similar content.
bulletKeep it simple--The best websites are actually the ones that are very simple in design, functionality, look, and feel.  Don't use more graphics than you have to and keep the graphics small in order to load more easily.  The intellectual complexity of the content is largely dependent upon your intended audience.
bulletUpdate website frequently--One good way to keep people coming back is to keep the content fresh and dynamic.  Some people update portions of their websites on a daily basis, others weekly, while some update it monthly.  It all depends upon the intended targeted audience and how dynamic that industry or subject matter really is.  Either way, all webmasters make it a point to change the overall look of the sight.

You have been given the basics and a starting point, go from there!
