How to Really Get a Recording Deal
Let’s face it; it is a waste of
time for musicians to send in demos to record labels in hopes of getting a
recording contract. Major labels and their subsidiaries do not accept
unsolicited material. Major labels have successful producers, artists, personal
managers, and attorneys shopping high quality demos to them. These industry
professionals have established track records and are a part of the trusted inner
circles. So then, why do major labels need to look to outside amateur sources
for artists when the industry professionals are already finding talent for
them? There are, basically, only two ways to get a recording contract.
 |
The first way is to have industry professionals with
an established track record shop a deal for you. But, then again, these
elusive industry professionals do not return phone calls if they don’t
know you or about you. This, then, leaves only one other option: release the
record yourself. |
 |
Releasing your own recording and creating a buzz are
perhaps the best career routes musicians can take.
Not only do they get to make all the business and creative decisions, but they
also have almost total control over the product life cycle (PLC) and they can
actually make much more money. All successful artists have a very
strong professional team behind them before they become successful. This
professional team includes a lawyer, personal manager, business manager,
agent, music publisher, producer, and a publicist. While there are no secret
formulas for success in this irregular music business, there are certain
qualities that all musicians must have in order to become successful. These
qualities are Originality, Identification, Vocals, Live Performances, Right
image, Hit record, Professional team, Contacts, Reliability, and Persistence. |
After you have released your own
record independently and sold 50,000-100,000 units, you don’t have to worry
about shopping a deal with the majors; they will come to you! The power, then,
will augur in your direction and you can virtually dictate how you want your
deal to be structured, if you choose to go with a major label at all.
You have been given the basics and a starting point, go from there!
