Music Publishing:  The Proverbial Gravy

Of all the revenue generating branches of the music industry, music publishing is by far the biggest revenue generator and the most consistent form of income one could ever wish for.  That is why music-publishing rights are the focal point of every recording contract negotiations.  In fact, deals are made and broken over who will own the music publishing rights, at what percentage, and for how long.  There are, basically, five major categories of revenue in the business of music publishing:

bullet

Foreign Income:  The United States publisher splits the income 50/50 with the composer from the net receipts received from the foreign publisher.

bullet

Print Income:  The publisher pays approximately “10 cents” per printed edition on all revenue collected from print sales.

bullet

Synchronization Income:  The publisher splits collected income with composer 50/50.

bullet

Mechanical Income:  Composer receives 50% of all income collected mechanical income by the publisher.

bullet

Performance Income:  Both writer and publisher are paid directly by his performing rights organization and retains all such “publisher’s share” and “writer’s share” of the performance income.

You have been given the basics and a starting point, go from there!
