Music Publishing: The Proverbial Gravy
Of all the revenue generating
branches of the music industry, music publishing is by far the biggest
revenue generator and the most consistent form of income one could ever wish
for. That is why music-publishing rights are the focal point of every recording
contract negotiations. In fact, deals are made and broken over who will own the
music publishing rights, at what percentage, and for how long. There are,
basically, five major categories of revenue in the business of music publishing:

Foreign Income:
The United States publisher splits the income 50/50 with the composer from the
net receipts received from the foreign publisher. |

Print Income:
The publisher pays approximately “10 cents” per printed edition on all revenue
collected from print sales. |

Synchronization Income:
The publisher splits collected income with composer 50/50. |
 |
Mechanical Income:
Composer receives 50% of all income collected mechanical income by the
publisher. |
 |
Performance Income:
Both writer and publisher are paid directly by his performing rights
organization and retains all such “publisher’s share” and “writer’s share” of
the performance income. |
