The ABC's of Live Webcasting

There are literally millions of creative individuals around the world who would love to share their artistic craft with a mass audience through a national or international medium such as radio or television, especially the latter.  But, from a realistic standpoint, less than one-tenth of one percent of all aspiring musicians will ever see light of day on national or international television.  There is a wonderful alternative for visually showcasing your music to the world through the Internet.  Internet broadcasting or webcasting is still in its infancy but it has already produced great aesthetic and technological breakthroughs and created a bunch of celebrities along the way.  Musicians can build an entire fan base on the web without the help of major entertainment conglomerates.  But before you run off and start to webcast there are certain things that must be taken into consideration like:

bulletWhat is the primary purpose of the webcast (business, education, entertainment)?
bulletWho is the intended audience?
bulletIs the same or similar content available somewhere else?
bulletWhat level of production value will be required?
bulletWill the content compete with or complement traditional media?
bulletWill the webcast require audience interaction?

After answering these questions, it is time to assemble the production team.  A webcast production team looks like this:

bulletProducer--this person coordinates all production activities and heads the production team
bulletContent developer--this person, who sometimes functions as the producer, is primarily responsible for coordination, organization, and format of the content that will be delivered over the Internet
bulletDirector--the director is responsible for all camera placement, lighting, sound, editing, streaming, and directing of performers
bulletPerformers--these are the people who will actually be streamed through the webcast
bulletTechnical engineer--this individual is responsible for advising the producer as to which hardware and software would work best for the webcast and make sure that all the complex hardware and software works properly
bulletAssistant technicians--these people work under the technical engineer providing technical support
bulletMarketing director--this person is responsible for creating and promulgating an advertising media plan online and offline

You have been given the basics and a starting point, go from there!
